それは、すっかり使い古された様子の赤茶色にサビついた自転車。
サドルには水玉模様のビニールカバーがかかり、傘もかけられたまま。
長い年月をともに過ごしてきたようなその佇まいに、私は人の暮らしとぬくもりを感じました。
“ああ、この自転車、どんな人が乗ってるんだろう…”
きっと年配の女性で、物を大切に使う方なんじゃないかな？
想像がふくらみ、気がつくと私は一度通り過ぎたその場所に戻り、スマホで一枚、写真を撮っていたんです。
そのあと、家に帰ってすぐ、アクリル絵の具でその自転車を描いてみることにしました。
アクリル絵の具は初心者にもぴったり！
今回使用したのは、ターナーのアクリル絵の具「U-35」シリーズ。
その中から赤・青・黄の三原色に、白と黒を加えた基本的な５色を選びました。
この5色さえあれば、たいていの色が混色で作れるので、
「色選びに悩まない」「コストも控えめ」という点で、アクリル初心者にもやさしい構成です。

アクリル絵の具のいいところは：
水彩よりも色がはっきりと出るので、作品に強さや印象を持たせたい時にも最適。
“乾いたらもう溶けない”という特性も、最初は少し戸惑うけれど、慣れるととても描きやすくなりますよ。
サビに宿る美しさを「金色」で表現してみた
今回の作品で一番こだわったのは、やはり自転車のサビの質感です。
赤茶けたボディに刻まれた時の流れ。
無機質な鉄なのに、なぜかぬくもりがある…。
そんな印象を絵に込めたくて、最後の仕上げにちょっとした工夫をしてみました。
それが、「金色のアクリル絵の具」を使うこと。
一見すると、金色のサビなんて現実にはないのですが、
私にはそのサビが、自転車の持ち主とともに歩んできた、輝きのように思えたんです。
キラッと反射する金の粒をところどころに散らすことで、
「サビ＝汚れ」ではなく、「サビ＝歴史と愛着」という視点で描けた気がします。
これは一例にすぎませんが、自分だけの解釈でワンポイントを入れるのも楽しいですよね！

アクリル絵の具で「紙に日常の風景を描く」ために必要なのは、実はほんの少しの画材と観察力だけ。
誰でも、気軽に始められます。

- 紙（厚手の水彩紙が◎）
- アクリル絵の具（5色あればOK）
- 筆とパレット、水入れ
- キッチンペーパー（拭き取り用）
紙は画用紙でも水彩紙でも可能。筆は、最初はお手持ちの水彩筆でも可能です。
ただし、水彩絵の具よりはアクリル絵の具の方が傷みやく、絵の具をつけたままにしておくと
すぐに固まってしまうので注意が必要です。
道具がそろったら、ぜひ身の回りの「なんてことない光景」に目を向けてみてください。
買い物帰りのスーパーの袋、雨上がりの水たまり、踏切の向こうの電車、
そんなちょっとした一瞬に、絵にしたくなる「美」がひそんでいることも。
アクリルは“きっちり描こうとしなくても成立する”力強さがあります。
色で遊ぶような感覚で始めてみると、思いがけない表現ができるかもしれません。

In this article, I’ll be sharing a small scene I painted using acrylics — an old bicycle I happened to notice on the street.

Art Is All Around Us — Even in the Everyday
One day, while walking my usual route to the train station, my eyes were drawn to a bicycle parked by the side of the road.
It was an old, rust-covered bike, with a reddish-brown hue showing years of wear.
A polka-dot vinyl seat cover was draped over the saddle, and an umbrella was still hanging from the side.
There was something about its presence — like it had shared a long journey with someone. I felt a quiet warmth, a sense of human life in that scene.
“Who rides this bike, I wonder…”
Maybe an older woman, someone who treats her belongings with great care?
My imagination ran wild, and before I knew it, I had walked back to the spot and snapped a quick photo on my phone.
Later, once I got home, I immediately picked up my acrylic paints and decided to capture that bicycle on paper.
Acrylic Paints Are Perfect for Beginners
For this piece, I used the Turner Acryl Gouache U-35 series — a great choice for beginners.
I selected five basic colors: the primary trio of red, blue, and yellow, plus white and black.
With just these five, you can mix an incredible variety of colors. It keeps things simple, budget-friendly, and beginner-friendly.

Here’s why acrylic paints are so beginner-friendly:
- They dry quickly, so you can layer colors right away
- You can use them on paper, fabric, or even wood — very versatile
- The colors are vibrant and show up just as you see them in the tube
- Compared to watercolors, they produce bolder, more defined results
Acrylics don’t re-dissolve once dry, which might take some getting used to — but once you do, they’re incredibly easy to work with!
Capturing the Beauty of Rust — with Gold Paint
What I focused on most in this painting was the texture of the rust on the bicycle.
The red-brown frame told a story of time passing.
Even though it’s made of cold metal, it somehow felt warm to me.
I wanted to express that feeling — so I added a personal twist for the final touch.
I used gold acrylic paint.
Of course, rust isn’t gold in real life.
But to me, the rust on that bike seemed to shimmer with the memories of its owner — a quiet, golden glow of time shared together.
By scattering a few sparkling flecks of gold here and there,
I was able to frame the rust not as “dirt,” but as something filled with history and affection.
It’s a small detail, but adding your own interpretation can be so fun and meaningful!
Tips for Getting Started with Acrylics (Even if You’re a Total Beginner)
To paint a simple scene on paper with acrylics, you really only need a few materials — and a little curiosity.
It’s easy and accessible for everyone.
📌 Basic Materials:
- Thick paper (like watercolor paper is ideal)
- Acrylic paints (just 5 colors is enough!)
- Paintbrushes, a palette, and a cup of water
- Kitchen paper (for wiping and dabbing)
You can start with watercolor brushes if that’s what you already have.
Just be aware that acrylics dry faster and can damage brushes if you leave paint on them — so clean up quickly!
Once you’re ready, try looking around for those “ordinary little moments” in your life.
A grocery bag on the way home, a puddle after the rain, a train just beyond the crossing…
In those small fragments of time, you might discover moments of beauty that are worth painting.
Acrylics have a strength — they don’t need to be perfect to be expressive.
Even just playing with colors can lead to beautiful, unexpected results.
